The Chenab Bridge is an iconic engineering marvel in India, known for being the highest railway bridge in the world. Located in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, this bridge is part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, aimed at improving rail connectivity to the Kashmir Valley.
Standing 359 meters (1,178 feet) above the Chenab River, the bridge surpasses the height of the Eiffel Tower. Its construction, which began in 2004, was a significant challenge due to the region’s tough terrain, seismic activity, and extreme weather. The bridge spans 1,315 meters (4,314 feet) in total length, with a central arch stretching 467 meters (1,532 feet).
Built using a combination of steel and concrete, the bridge is designed to withstand harsh conditions, including winds up to 266 km/h and earthquakes up to magnitude 8. The construction involved advanced techniques like incremental launching and cable cranes for assembling the massive steel arch.
Inaugurated in 2022, the Chenab Bridge not only enhances transportation and connectivity in the region but also stands as a testament to modern engineering capabilities in India. It plays a crucial role in the socio-economic development of the area, making travel safer and more accessible in this remote part of the country.
